Como cuido das minhas unhas / How I care for my nails

Some of you guys beg for a guide on how to care for nails. My ultimate FAQ is "are your nails real?" and "how do you shape your nails like that?" (the shape they are referring to is stiletto or almond). People usually think that I spent hours at the nail salon, but the truth is that I do everything at home and I've gone to a nail salon only twice - once when I was a flower girl and at my last trip this earlier this year because it was a beautiful and so professional salon, they even respected my choices of shape and not removing my cuticles (I'll explain why I don't get rid my cuticles, wait for it!). It's been almost 10 years since I started wearing long nails. I used to bite them a lot when I was a kid, then when I was 10 a figure skater RC Barbie doll twice the size of a regular one came out and my grandma promised she would give it to me if I stopped biting. Since then I got over that bad habit - but I never really got the doll! Sure, I was very judged for using super long nails when I was only a child but they always made me feel prettier and why not safe. They always joke that I have a "weapon" instead of fingernails, and they can actually be very helpful if I ever need someday (and I hope this day will never come, right?).

My nails are naturally strong and to speed up growth and strengthen even more I use a glicerin-based hand cream by Avon Care that can be used on both hands and nails, but in general, any hand cream can be rubbed on the cuticles. That is an old hack Rita Hayworth was a fan, whom was known for having the "longest nails in Hollywood". This cream is sooo budget-friendly. I've been using it for two years now and didn't expire yet! I'm almost running out of it but lasts for so long! A single drop smaller than a pea is enough to rub on the cuticles.
♥ And talking about cuticles, the reason I don't cut it is very simple: removing the cuticles weaken the nails as they are meant to be a protecting layer and getting rid of it allows entrance for fungus and bacteria. "But Amyh, I have really thick cuticles!"; have you ever thought that your cuticles are thick exactly because you cut them? When you cut such important part of your organism, your body thinks that it should make it stronger and make them grow even thicker. That's why my cuticles are almost invisible! Great and famous manicurists never cut them. So leave your nippers behind, your nails and body will be very grateful!
♥ Shaping your nails stilleto, I'm not gonna lie, might be a little annoying. When I have to cut my nails (usually because they broke after months of long and pointy claws) I file it in a round shape to save time later. Then I must be patient and use the cream to speed up growth (or they will look like this). When they are long enough, I file the sides until they achieve a peak-like shape and file the tip until it's pointy. A week later aprroximately they will not look as stiletto as before because the shape changes whilst growing, so keep an eye on it and file everytime you need (I always keep a mini-file on my makeup bag because of that). My favorite nail is that one in the picture bellow, from Daiso.
♥ I drink a lot of water too! Seriously, that makes a whole difference!

NÃO INCOMODA? ♥
DOESN'T IT MAKE DAILY LIFE DIFFICULT?

The classic question "how do you wipe yourself?" doesn't make sense at all. We wipe ourselves with toilet paper, not with nails, right? For beginners, it's normal to feel like it's hard to do simple daily tasks, but you'll get used with time. I don't recall any serious difficulty on my daily life because of my nails, actually I only think of advantages: it's easier to type on my phone, open plastic seals, find the edge of a tape and it's an utility for BDSM practitioners like me - if you get it, you get it! The only bad part of it is that I accidentally scratch myself sometimes and look like I just fought with a cat, when I was just itchy.

♥ NADA FUNCIONA, MINHAS UNHAS CONTINUAM QUEBRANDO! ♥
NOTHING WORKS, MY NAILS ARE STILL BREAKING!

If stop cutting cuticles, improving eating habits, drinking more water, filing frequently and using hand cream or strengthening polish didn't work, maybe you got a health issue. See a doctor for help. In this case, the best alternative are gel or acrylic nails. They're a little pricey but last for a month and it's break-free guarantee! You can also do it yourself at home with a UV lamp and gel polishes.

♥ TENHA INSPIRAÇÕES, MAS NÃO EXPECTATIVAS INALCANÇÁVEIS! ♥
HAVE INSPIRATIONS, BUT NOT UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS!

I think it's important to have a reference to get inspired, whether it's for nails, clothing, makeup or hair. However, it's ideal to find inspiration on something or someone you can actually copy. It's useless if you want to have Lana Del Rey's nails (she's one of my biggest inspos, btw)but yours are fragile and you can't use gel or acrylic. Pinterest and the celebrity world have so many cool inspirations for all tastes and types of nails!

Lana & Rita, always my #nailgoals!

Beijinhos!
And that's all folks! Hope this post was useful for everyone who have been dreaming of having long nails! Any suggestion, tip or product recommendation? Leave a comment! You can also send'em on my Instagram! XOXO!
