Exotique Magazine

After so much time since my post about Bizarre, I thought that it would be fair to talk about the Exotique magazine. Published between 1955 and 1959, it unfortunately had less issues than Bizarre, a total of 36 only. It was published by Leonard Burtman and, although it was produced by John Willie, its illustrations were made by Eric Stanton (author of Bizarre Comix) and Gene Bilbrew (who often used the pseudonymous of ENEG). Bettie Page and Burtman's wife, Tana Louise (stage name was Cincinnati Sinner), were the most frequent models at the magazine. Louis was also a burlesque dancer and had worked with Irving Klaw previously. Though iconic among the Exotique fans, she stopped posing after divorcing Burtman, disappearing from the public eye since then.

Tana Louise

Different of Bizarre, that published pulp fiction-like stories and reader's letters, Exotique had a few articles written mostly by Burtman (under a pseudonymous, Tana Louise did write some too), comics, photography and illustrations of dominatrices, where men were nothing but the slaves of women dressed by corsets, garterbelts, gloves and extreme heels. The magazine approached transvestism too. It did not include nudity or sexual themes, specializing exclusively on fetishisim.

Gene Bilbrew

Burtman retornou nos anos 60 com outros títulos similares à Exotique, como Connosieur, Mistress of Desire, Masque, The She-Devil, Bizarre Life e muitos outros.
Sadly, the magazine had the same destiny of so many other fetish magazines and material from that time: Burtman was unfairly arrested by pornography (in case you didn't know it yet, producing porn was illegal back in time). The entire material of Exotique was confiscated. Burtman returned in the 60's with similar titles, such as Connosieur, Mistress of Desire, Masque, The She-Devil, Bizarre Life and so many other.

Bettie Page

That's all folks! I wish this post was really long just like the Bizarre one but unfortunately the story of Exotique is shorter and it's harder to find their stuff on the web. I'm thinking of doing a research about Burtman's less popular publications - comment in case you're interested! See ya!

  1. Acho incríveis as ilustrações dessas revistas!
